5 Tips for Choosing a Crane

July 16, 2019

With advancements in technology, cranes have become more commonly seen on construction and demolition projects. OH&S Online offers buyers the following tips.

  1. Check the load weight to be lifted. Match the crane’s lifting capacity to the load. For example, using a high-capacity crane for a small load will waste time, labor, and money. On the other hand, a low-capacity crane can lead to fatal accidents and cause damage to the load. Also determine the  type of load. For example, moving a liquid-filled tank will require special lifting conditions compared to moving a concrete block.

  2. Know the lift height. The length of the crane’s boom will depend on how high the load needs to go. For example, you will need a longer boom the higher the lift.

  3. Find the moving distance. If you need to transport loads from one spot to another, consider a mobile crane. If there is a fixed path of movement, you can also use a crane with rails. Three primary factors—the counterweight, support structure, and boom stability—will play a critical role in traveling this distance safely.

  4. Evaluate the on-site terrain. If the terrain is uneven, you should use rough-terrain cranes. For flat and firm terrains, truck-mounted cranes will ensure mobility and stability.

  5. Check possible safety issues. You will need to inspect not only the crane, but its surroundings for potential safety hazards. Accounting for potential obstacles, such as navigating overhead power cables, catwalks, and scaffolds, can help prevent damage to a load.
