This year's BIM Show Live highlights how BIM can be used to crate safer construction environments while improving efficiency and sustainability.

BIM Show Live 2020 is just around the corner and it is set to be bigger and better than ever. BIM Show Live attracts up to 400 delegates, facilitating networking opportunities to discuss emerging ideas and technological advancements in the digital construction world.

What is BIM? BIM is an acronym for Building Information Modeling. It is a highly collaborative process that allows multiple stakeholders and AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) professionals to collaborate on the planning, design and construction of a building within one 3D model. Data from the buildings is made available to stakeholders allowing them to make informed decisions. BIM Level 2 focuses on the collaborative environment. It requires all project and asset information, documentation and data to be electronic, which supports efficient delivery at the design and construction phases of the project. BIM Level 2 was mandated in 2016 by the UK government to be used for all public sector construction projects.

This year the theme of BIM Show Live moves towards “BIM for Good” looking at how BIM can be successful used to improve sustainability, create safer environments and maximise efficiencies in buildings and cities.

Maximising Efficiency

Teams can work together to develop the most suited design and test it on the computer before it is built. During construction BIM enables helps supply chain efficiently share information, reducing the risk of errors and waste.

BIM and digital construction were identified as key strategic drivers for increasing productivity and collaboration in the government’s strategy (2016-20). This was included in a strategy to deliver £1.7 billion in efficiency savings. At the design stage, designers, clients and end users can work together to develop the most suited design and test it on the computer before it is built. During construction BIM enables the supply chain to efficiently share precise information about components which reduces the risk of errors and waste.

Adam Matthews from the Centre for Digital Built Britain is set to present “BIM for Poverty Reduction” at this year’s BIM Show Live. BIM for Good is epitomised in this talk as Adam will discuss how BIM as a methodology is being used for the efficient delivery of infrastructure in middle income countries with the aim of reducing poverty.

Increasing Sustainability

The World Green Building Trends surveyed more than 2,000 participants including architects, engineers and contractors, and found nearly half intend to make their projects greener over the next three years. According to the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), sustainable resource advocates, the UK construction industry is responsible for 45% of our carbon emissions as well as 33% of all waste produced. What role does BIM have? In regards to BIM and environmental innovation, “The highest-ranked response in the Green Building Trends Report was the adoption of early-analysis tools with building information models to analyse potential performance.” Going forward it is clear to see BIM has a vital role in reducing the environmental impact of construction projects.

Safer Environments

BIM and other connected technology solutions are helping contractors provide safer construction environments by identifying risks much earlier in the design and building processes.

The UK construction sector accounts for 26% of all reported occupational fatalities despite only making up 4% of the UK workforce (HSE, 2015). BIM is playing an active role in enabling improvements in health & safety in the working environment.

PBC lists the how BIM technology can benefit working conditions:

  • Inform and help develop a better, more realistic construction phase plan;
  • Safety/environmental teams can gain an enhanced understanding of activities that may carry a risk on, or immediately around the site;
  • Reach a better level of engagement with client and key stakeholders;
  • Reduce site visits by providing access to 3D data and visuals via a secure project Common Data Environment (CDE).

An Integrated BIM Technology Approach

Viewpoint will be on hand during BIM Show Live 2020 to highlight its own integrated BIM Manager solution.

Viewpoint offers a BIM add-on to its market-leading Viewpoint For Projects, an integrated project management solution designed to connect people, information, and processes so that the right information always reaches the right person at the right time, helping businesses to save time and money, improve control, and reduce risk. Viewpoint BIM Manager is a browser-based solution which enables project teams to easily access, edit, and revise models, providing a complete picture of the project. BIM Manger is a key component of Viewpoint For Projects.

BIM Show Live 2020 is taking place at the Boiler Shop, Newcastle, UK, on 26-27 February 2020. Viewpoint is proud to be attending BIM Show Live 2020 as gold sponsors. Viewpoint will be on stand 11-12.
