Delays in reopening traffic lanes following an overnight resurfacing project in the Cleveland area have earned Kokosing Construction Co. a $12,800 fine from the Ohio Dept. of Transportation. According to an agency statement, Kokosing kept travel lanes on I-480 blocked beyond the contractually scheduled 6:00 a.m. reopening time, resulting in lengthy travel delays during the morning rush hour. Citing unspecified incidents on other highway projects, the agency has vowed to revise its statewide contract standards with “stiffer disincentives” for contractors to miss lane reopening deadlines. ODOT says fines will be based on the route’s traffic volume and number of lanes closed as part of the project.
