In the woods of Hudson Valley, the Catskill Mountains, and rural areas of Connecticut, developers are scooping up acres of land for high-end communities. With consumer demand for more space, privacy, and an escape from city life, developers are hoping their communities can replace traditional vacation homes, such as timeshares in the Hamptons, according to the New York Times. These secluded, luxury communities—with home prices averaging around $1 million—have already proven successful: The Hudson Woods community hosts 26 dwellings in 131 acres, located two hours outside New York City, and they’re all snatched up. Jason Brown is a longtime graphic designer and the co-founder of a marketing firm in Brooklyn. Today he is also part of a wave of newly minted developers who are bringing a new design aesthetic and eco-consciousness to rural towns within the orbit of New York City.

In partnership with a city-based real estate developer, Mr. Brown plans to build homes that draw on Scandinavian and Japanese influences on a 140-acre site in Greene County, a two-and-a-half-hour drive north of Manhattan.
