After a review of more than 50 entrants to ENR Midwest's Annual Top Specialty Contractors rankings, JF Ahern of Fond du Lac, Wis., has been voted ENR Midwest Specialty Contractor of the Year by the editors.

Ahern is a mechanical, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing and fire protection contractor that did 2019 business in 10 states of our 11-state region. Only Ohio didn't have a JF Ahern project last year.

While JF Ahern's projects range from everything from data centers to schools, government office buildings and even sustainability efforts at the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed SC Johnson campus in Racine, Wis., one particular strength was its healthcare work. Ahern fabricated and installed all of piping, ductwork, electrical cable trays and mechanical systems for the Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin campus in Milwaukee. It included 40,000 sq ft of HVAC ducts and piping, more than 18,000 ft of plumbing pipes and electrical trays and integrated wall assemblies. Ducts, mechanical piping, electrical conduits and cable trays, med-gas piping and fire protection assemblies were produced in Ahern's fabrication shops and the heavy-scope job was job done on time and assemblies were delivered ready for contractor Mortenson and MEP engineer Canon Design.

The editors were also impressed by the company's steady growth, jumping from $292.6 million in 2018 revenue, 6th in ENR Midwest Top Specialty Contractors, to  $316.1 million and 5th in ENR Midwest's Top Specialty Contractors this year. ENR Midwest will have an in-depth feature showcasing more of JF Ahern's work in its September issue. Until then, enjoy this video on the company's website explaining its scope of work on the Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin project.
