The folks at Kespry and John Deere dealer West Side Tractor have put together a brief video that shows how easy it is to start using a drone.

The video opens with a look at Deere dozers and graders working near Indianapolis Motor Speedway. West Side grade control specialist Mason Adkins then explains the simple procedure he follows for demos.

First, open the Kespry drone control app on a tablet, then create a mission and give it a name, tapping the screen to create a geofence for the area in which the drone is to fly.

“That’s your safe zone,” Adkins says.

Then, the same simple tapping denotes a capture area for data, usually within the geofence, but capture areas can be customized. After that, adjust slider controls on the screen for height/elevation.

Next, go through a checklist on the app, making any final calibrations. And, check to see if there are any airspace advisories to make sure the flight will be in the clear, confirm the GPS signal, and take off.

“It’s very user friendly,” Adkins says.

Finally, he’ll hand the iPad to the customer, fly with him for five minutes and talk he or she through it—it’s time to capture data.
