Lending time and talent to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children

Some children in the U.S. are neglected or abused so badly that they can’t live with their families—if they have families at all.

Who cares for them? Where do they go? Who do they turn to for help?

St. Jude’s Ranch for Children stares this problem in the face every single day, providing housing, treatment and hope for the children who need it most in the Las Vegas region.

It’s simple: Every kid deserves a safe, stable place to live.

St. Jude’s Ranch for Children believes it. We do, too. So when they asked the community for help, we marshalled some volunteers to assist on a project that will help the 52-year-old organization to continue its vital work.

Residential cottages at the Ranch

Many of the children under the care of St. Jude’s Ranch for Children stay in cottages ringing the organization’s campus in Boulder City, Nevada, just a 40-minute drive from The Korte Company’s Las Vegas Division.

Those cottages need some work, and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) is spearheading a project to refurbish them.

There’s a lot to do, including:

  • Stucco patching
  • Interior and exterior painting
  • Installing new flooring, plumbing fixtures, doors and electrical fixtures
  • Installing new cabinetry and appliances
  • Roof work
  • Exterior landscape clean-up

We got in touch with NAIOP to see what we could do to help. They paired us up with R&O Construction and assigned us two cottages to work on during the month of May. It’s the second phase of the multi-phase project.

Our corps of volunteers included workers and supervisors who were diverted from their work-related projects to complete the job at the Ranch.

“We are grateful for The Korte Company’s support,” said St. Jude’s Ranch for Children Executive Director Christina Vela. “The improvements being made will help us provide more housing options for the children and young people we serve while showing them how much the community cares about them.”

“There are many non-profits in Southern Nevada doing important community outreach. St. Jude’s Ranch for Children is one of them,” said Greg Korte, President of the The Korte Company’s Las Vegas Division. “This project lets us take our skillsets and subcontractor and vendor relationships to assist St. Jude’s and their mission.”

We salute those who made this possible

We owe our thanks to three groups of people, each responsible for the successful completion of the cottage renovations.

First, we thank the volunteers. They heard the Ranch’s call and they answered, giving up their time to do the dirty work. The residents of the revitalized cottages are getting the care they need in a clean, safe, modern environment and it’s thanks to a group of regular people who care about their community.

Second, we thank the countless vendors around the region who donated all the supplies used in the project. They gave supplies away that they could have been paid for, and they did it gladly. Thanks to them, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children can focus its resources on its core mission of hope and healing for children who have been abused and neglected.

Finally, we thank St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. Where would these kids be if not at the Ranch? Few are willing to address the challenges and trauma these children face. That’s why the Ranch’s efforts are so critical to the Las Vegas region, and it’s why we think it’s important to help them do what they do.

We’re proud to have taken part in this project. We see a little of ourselves and our history in the volunteers, suppliers and Ranch personnel who made this possible. It reminds us of Ralph Korte, our founder, who built this company and its reputation by doing right by his customers and helping people who need it.
