Google Continues Growth In Texas

The tech giant is increasing its presence in the Lone Star State with a new data center in Midlothian and two new office buildings in Austin.

After serving as its home for more than a decade, Google is extending its commitment to Texas with a new data center in Midlothian, and the lease of two new buildings for its Austin workforce. The projects are part of Google’s larger $13 billion investment in offices and data centers across the U.S., announced earlier this year.

“The Lone Star state has become a hub for tech innovation and we’ve been fortunate to be a part of its growth from the very beginning,” said a statement from Google. “It’s the amazing talent and spirit of work and play that brought us to Texas 12 years ago and it’s what keeps us here today. We look forward to meeting our new neighbors in the Midlothian-Dallas Metro area and we’re excited to be a part of these communities for many years to come.”

Google will invest $600 million to develop the Midlothian data center, just south of Dallas, which will create an unspecified number of full-time jobs. The data center will host servers and hardware for billions of Gmail, YouTube and other Google app users from all over the world. The company will make a $100,000 grant to the Midlothian Independent School District to support the continued growth and development of the region’s STEM programs in schools.

“The Lone Star State continues its emergence as a global technology hub thanks to an economic environment that encourages innovation and allows the free market to flourish,” said Gov. Greg Abbott. “Time and again, companies like Google choose to invest in Texas because of our business-friendly practices and our talented workforce. Google’s expansion in the city of Midlothian will create hundreds of jobs for Texans and contribute immensely to the brand of economic prosperity only found in Texas. I am grateful to Google for their continued investment in the Lone Star State and look forward to building on our already strong partnership.”

In Austin, Google already has more than 1,100 employees working across Android, G Suite, Google Play, Cloud, staffing and recruiting, people operations, finance and marketing. To accommodate its short and long-term growth, the tech giant has leased additional office space. In East Austin, Google will lease 150,000 square feet at the Saltillo office building. The second lease is for the entire Block 185 building, a 35-story sail-like tower with 723,000 square feet of space in downtown Austin. Google expects to begin moving employees into the Saltillo building in early 2020, and anticipates moving into Block 185, still under construction, in 2023.

“We are excited to welcome Google to our Block 185 project, deepening our real estate relationship with this world class company,” said Adam Nims, managing director of Trammell Crow Co. in Austin. “Their growth in Austin has been nothing short of spectacular, and we were thrilled to be selected to accommodate their expansion directly adjacent to our initial lease together at 500 West 2nd St. Google’s lease solidifies their commitment to the Austin community and continues to reinforce the desirability of Austin’s down-town core for high growth companies.”
