Hawaii Talks Underwater Tunnel Construction

Feb. 20, 2020

A bill that would require the Hawaii Department of Transportation to study the feasibility of a new route to connect Ewa, Hawaii to downtown Honolulu has cleared its first committee, the Honolulu Civil Beat reports. According to the article, the state would build an underwater tunnel for vehicle traffic to “provide a more direct connection” between the regions.

According to House Bill 1950, the legislature finds that “the upcoming decades will bring tens of thousands of new homes” to nearby areas of West Oahu. As a result, traffic experts predict that road congestion will double or triple. The bill continues, saying the implementation of toll roads will not be enough to provide the additional transportation capacity for west Oahu residents.

The legislation does not currently indicate where an underwater tunnel would be built.
