A third-party design review of the Houston Ship Channel bridge project by COWI North America found 21 areas of “significant concern” on the project. Work on the $962-million bridge, designed by FIGG Bridge Engineers, was halted in January after an initial review uncovered problems related to design of the curved portions of the main pylons’ legs on the bridge’s cable-stayed segment. Those concerns remain, COWI said. The Harris County Toll Road Authority, which is in charge of the project, is recommending that FIGG and COWI work together to resolve the issues. A statement from FIGG indicates the firm was not surprised by the report that was released on March 10.
