Repeated delays with the I-35-U.S. Route 30 interchange project could cost Harmony, Minn.-based Minnowa Construction Inc. more than $800,000 in penalties, according to the Iowa Dept. of Transportation. Originally scheduled for completion in late 2018, the $23-million project has encountered multiple problems with piers for a 1,690-ft-long continuous steel deck flyover bridge. The issues ranged from improper concrete settlement to last July’s discovery that all six brick veneer-clad cast-in-place structures deviated from their specified heights by 3 in. to 6 in. Rework and other construction-related delays have pushed the interchange completion date to mid-summer 2019.
