Nearly 50 years after debuting as a new standard for passenger aviation facilities, Terminal A at Kansas City International Airport is being cleared to make way for a $1.5-billion terminal being developed as a public-private partnership by Edgemoor Construction and Real Estate, an affiliate of Bethesda, Md.-based Clark Construction. Since early June, a demolition team led by Renacent, along with seven local minority- and women-owned firms, has been gradually working away at both ends of the semicircular concrete and steel building, originally configured along the airport’s remaining two terminals to provide convenient “drive to your gate” parking for passengers. Closed since 2012 as a result of airline industry consolidation, Terminal A’s concrete will be reused as grading fill for KCI’s new 39-gate, 1-million-sq-ft terminal, which is scheduled to be operational in early 2023. The project, the largest in Kansas City’s history, also includes a 6,300-space parking structure, as well as other landside and airside improvements.
