The Mississippi Dept. of Transportation has closed 34 municipally owned timber-pile bridges under an emergency order from Gov. Phil Bryant (R). Federal inspectors found the structures to be severely deteriorated, with some in imminent danger of collapse, according to an agency spokesperson who added that it will be up to the localities to formulate repair strategies. Bryant’s closure order, which will help preserve some $530 million in annual FHWA funding, follows a similar move in April 2018 that affected more than 100 deficient structures across the state. MSDOT says nearly two-thirds were repaired by the localities.
