The office of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) is orchestrating energy retrofits for nine public buildings with a combined area of 1.6 million sq ft. The project, in its scoping phase, is expected to reduce energy consumption by at least 50% and carbon emissions by 30% or more. The city also is planning to identify another 28 buildings for future retrofits. Work might include improved insulation, redesigns to increase natural light, better ventilation, electric fixture upgrades and automated heating and cooling systems. The buildings include the Brooklyn Museum (above), a garage, two shelters, two family residences, two schools and a police department maintenance facility. Design will begin after studies are done, likely in about nine months.
