A sweeping overhaul of the New Jersey Turnpike’s congested Interchange 14A aimed not only to bring relief to drivers, but also to deliver critical improvements to a busy commerce-heavy district straddling Bayonne and Jersey City.

The $286-million project—the closest interchange to major facilities such as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Global Container Terminal, a cruise ship terminal and large mixed-use developments—entailed work on 14 new or reconstructed ramps, 11 new or upgraded retaining walls, five new bridges, two screen walls, and a culvert extension. It also added a new roundabout, sign structures, traffic signals and lighting; expanded the toll plaza; relocated utilities; and improved drainage.

The interchange—which serves 50,000 vehicles daily, including 6,000 trucks—improved access to state routes 440 and 185, doubled capacity on a main connector bridge to 4,000 vehicles per hour, 15% greater toll plaza capacity, and improved traffic flow. The team also focused on minimizing disruption with a traffic management plan.
