A Grove City, Pennsylvania, man died Tuesday morning after falling into a pond on a riding mower at an American Legion post in Mercer County, state police said.

John A. Walochik, 65, was riding a zero-turn lawn mower on the front lawn of the American Legion property on Mercer Grove City Road in Findlay around 8:30 a.m. when he accidentally veered into the pond.

Police said Walochik was mowing the lawn near the edge of a 20-foot-deep retention pond when the mower accidentally slid in. The lawn mower was submerged and only Walochik’s limbs were visible from the surface, police said. He was the only person in the vicinity when the incident occurred, according to police.

Although multiple Legion members arrived at the post shortly after the incident, they did not see Walochik’s body in the pond. At 11:45 a.m.—nearly three hours after the accident occurred—a co-worker went outside for a break, noticed the body and alerted the police.
