Renovation work in active hospitals is among the most complex of construction operations due to the high level of risk. The slightest bit of dust, vibration or noise can cause life-threatening challenges for patients. When Porter Adventist Hospital decided to pursue a multiphase renovation in several departments, with minimal operational downtime, it was essential that the project team understood how to work in those sensitive spaces.

Rigorous site investigation and project planning between Saunders Construction and the architect took place for nearly 10 months before construction began. The project’s scope included updates and additions to the electrical and mechanical equipment in the 88-year-old building. Interior renovations included laboratory and morgue areas, the central utility plant, physicians lounge, health information management offices, medical library, operating rooms and the café and dining area.
