With the nearest gas station some 20 minutes away and the closest town even farther, going out to lunch during construction of this luxury golf, spa and nature retreat was “next to impossible,” according to its builder, PCL Construction Services Inc. So the team set up an affordable, on-site cook shack and frequently hosted celebratory cookouts for workers and consultants to eat, gather and hang out.
The resort’s out-of-the-way location—it is one of the more remote projects of this year’s winners, the judges noted—proved challenging in other ways, as it was nestled on 16,000 acres between Tampa and Orlando on a former phosphate mine. Paying close attention to detail across the rugged landscape was critical, and contractors even had to learn safety regulations that applied under both the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration, the latter being more typical to construction work.
As work progressed on facilities that included a three-story golf clubhouse, a posh, 305,000-sq-ft lodge featuring 228 high-end guest rooms and a dedicated water-wastewater treatment plant, the team kept a watchful eye on productivity and quality by developing pictorial schedules and transparently tracking costs to keep schedule and budget in harmony. The project was also a great test site for Autodesk’s BIM 360 Field software, which allowed punch-listers to document work easily with iPads.
