STEM students tour Korte site to see healthy, safe construction in action

First- and second-grade students from St. John Neumann Catholic School in Maryville, Illinois toured an active jobsite to learn about health and safety in construction.

The 13 students who toured the Goshen Medical Office Campus site in neighboring Edwardsville are members of the school’s FIRST LEGO League Jr. (FLLJR) team.

According to the FLLJR organization, “the program focuses on building interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through a real-world challenge–to be solved by research, critical thinking and imagination.”

FLLJR’s 2020 theme—Boomtown Build—encourages students “to imagine and create a healthy and happy community.”

The team’s coaches felt a visit to the active jobsite was “the perfect example of how designing and building come together in a safe and healthy way.”

“We were thrilled to get a tour of the facility and learn from the experts,” the coaches added.

“Having these young students on the Anderson site, taking a real look at what goes into the construction of a facility like this was as rewarding to us as it was to them,” said Project Manager Eric Kues. “It’s always a benefit to connect education with real life experiences, and I’m glad we were able to be a part of that process.”

See more details about the Boomtown Build challenge here. In all, 28,000 teams made up of 168,000 children from 70 countries comprise the FLLJR program.

More about the Goshen Medical Office Campus

Our work at the Goshen Medical Office Campus currently includes construction of an 18,331-square-foot facility. Two tenants will split it:

  • St. Louis-based SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital will operate its new Specialty Clinic in the facility
  • Anderson Hospital, headquartered in Maryville, will house its Anderson Surgery Center in the building, too

Once complete, the facility will join the list of dozens of projects we’ve delivered for Anderson Hospital over the last three decades. The close ties we’ve built with our partners at Anderson are a testament to the quality and value of Design-Build construction.

The Korte Company’s Jason Weiss, who is the Executive Director of Project Management added, “Working with Anderson Hospital over the years has been a great experience, and when we get to share that with the community they serve, it’s especially gratifying.”
