Local landscape companies are forced to consider scaling back operations. Some could even go out of business, because they can’t acquire enough legal, seasonal workers to supplement their workforce.

This is due to the federal government denying workers access to the H-2B visa program. The program allows U.S. employers who meet specific requirements to bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary nonagricultural jobs.

Many of the workers come from Mexico legally under the program for about nine months and return home to their families. However, it’s not only the seasonal workers that will be affected, employers say.

“We may have to downsize and we will have to cut a lot of the American jobs,” said Jason Turpin, owner of Turpin Landscape. “This is absolutely political and it all has to do with the work force visa program.”
