VIDEO: ARTBA Honors Four Students in Transportation & Safety Video Contest

Feb. 5, 2019

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) has announced the winners of its 8th annual Student Transportation Video Contest. The association received 21 submissions from students across the country in two categories: transportation and safety. The contest aims to raise awareness about infrastructure issues, ARTBA said in a press release.

Submission topics included road safety, funding public transportation, bridge maintenance, and automated vehicles.

In age group one (elementary, middle, and high school students), Alexander Zapata, a senior at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona, won for his video “The Arizona Public Transportation Question.” His video highlights how residents rely on the city’s light rail system. The video “Road Safety,” by Bennington High School senior Kailee Matlock, took first in the safety category. Matlock’s video spotlighted a recent car accident, and the safety features of her car.

Age group two (post secondary, college, graduate level) winners included Astrid March, a masters student at Regis University Boston, and Mchaji Celestaine of Texas Southern University for their videos “The Shift Toward Cycling” and “The Cyclist’s Guide to Transportation Safety.” Their videos detailed the increasing demand for bike infrastructure, and the top three causes of biking accidents.
