Crews installed the first of 56 steel arch segments on the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge earlier this month in Washington, D.C. Fabricated in Eau Claire, Wis., before being trucked to the job site where cranes and crews lift them into place, the arch segments weigh between 50 and 100 tons. Installation of the arches is expected to take six months. The six-lane bridge is the largest infrastructure project in the history of the District Dept. of Transportation. Besides replacing a nearly 70-year-old span across the Anacostia River and reconstructing the Suitland Parkway/I-295 interchange, the project includes safety enhancements for vehicles and pedestrians, multimodal transportation options, bicycle facilities, community access and economic development benefits.
