The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) has been selected by ENR’s editors as the 2019 ENR MidAtlantic Owner of the Year. 

Owners of the Year are chosen for their innovation and creativity throughout the region as well as their contributions to their community. The last five MidAtlantic winners include DelDott, Douglas Development, PennDOT, DC Public Schools and DC Water. 

WSSC currently has around 40 active construction projects within its service area, including projects to repair, replace or rehabilitate water and sewer mains. The agency works in the water and wastewater industry, as well as engineering and energy sectors. 

Established in 1918, WSSC's network of nearly 5,742 miles of fresh water pipeline and 5,546 miles of sewer pipeline makes it one of the largest water and wastewater utilities in the nation. Spanning nearly 1,000 square miles in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties in Maryland, WSSC's service area includes 1.8 million residents through approximately 475,000 customer accounts.

WSSC operates and maintains three water reservoirs with a total holding capacity of 14 billion gallons, two water filtration plants with the capacity to produce a total of 390 million gallons per day (MGD) of safe drinking water, and six wastewater treatment plants with a total capacity to handle 71.08 MGD.  WSSC has never had a drinking water violation since its founding.
