The Stihl Tour des Trees is a week-long, 500-mile cycling event held each year to benefit the Tree Research and Education Endowment Fund (TREE Fund). Since 1992 the Tour des Trees has raised more than $6.6 million for scientific research and education programs related to arboriculture and urban forestry. Stihl Inc. has served as title sponsor for the tour since 2009.
This year’s tour traveled through the state of Wisconsin, visiting major cities like Milwaukee and Madison, as well as smaller cities and villages like Seymour and Fox Point. The 85 cyclists each raised at least $3,500 for the TREE Fund. The money raised supports the discovery of better methods for propagation, planting and care of urban trees. The Tour also funds education programs aimed at connecting young people with the environment and with career opportunities in the green industries. Several Corporate sponsorships help pay for the event costs, ensuring money raised by riders is dedicated solely to research and education.
The tour featured several tree plantings and community events. Professor Elwood Pricklethorn (arborist and veteran Tour cyclist Warren Hoselton) provided educational programs along the route for young audiences.
