As part of the ongoing decommissioning of the site, Magnox has started the bid race for the complex project to reduce the height of the site’s 55m tall reactor buildings by around a third.

The shortening work represents a significant milestone in the programme to safely and sustainably decommission the site.

In addition, a package of civil new build and remedial works will also be delivered to prolong the durability of the retained structures, ready for later phases of decommissioning.

Angharad Rayner, Trawsfynydd Site Director, said: “The reactor buildings have formed a recognisable landmark on the Snowdonia National Park skyline for decades, so the reduction in height will be a visible sign of our progress.”

Planning permission to reduce the height of the buildings has previously been granted to Magnox, following a public consultation, with significant internal structural work already completed.

Interested firms have until 26 June to return PQQs with invitations sent to selected tenders on 11 August.

The height reduction project will get underway by November next year.
