Okay, I know they are trying… “they” being major “BIM” vendors such as Autodesk/Revit…and a far second Graphisoft/Archicad. But, are these folks a significant part of the reason why BIM isn’t taking hold? Why BIM is so misunderstood? “Without a doubt, BIM has disrupted the the design profession.”

I believe there to be a number of reasons for this to have happen: External forces changed the industry from solution based approach to output focused; Contractual framework, procurement methods, outsourcing, risk management and compliance requirements all transformed drastically. And project managers turned up too.

Skeptics will say, that was no BIM, just 3D, but the fact is that I used 3D for documenting full buildings from the first day I learned ArchiCAD (4.5), applied appropriate materials (meta data!) – and jumped on the first opportunity of doing 4D models when I came across, the then extremely buggy and highly temperamental Construction Simulation.

First and foremost BIM is the life-cycle management of the built environment supported by digital technology. While the industry is currently fixated upon 3D visualization tools, aka Revit, Archicad, Bentely… they only represent components of a BIM solution.
