  1. I did teach a Corps of Engineers Estimating Class for Modifications for over 30 years. We then didi it the old fashion way with a stubby pencil and using a sample problem found on a site that included differing site conditions, impact, time extension, additional work, etc. We had a discussion on RS Means Estimating books. Our clear message then was the books were only a starting point, but not the final answer. If you took the numbers from the book, you will get an answer, but does the book exactly match your individual job conditions, no, you had to adjust for YOUR conditions.

    1. Hello Rick,

Great comment. RSMeans Cost Data is extremely valuable do to its organization (standardized MASTERFORMAT), descriptions, localization indexes, etc. All of these attributes enable better communication and transparency among construction project participants.
That said, all particular construction requirements are not with RSMeans Cost Data. Furtherore, as you note, specific site conditions, construction specifications, labor pools, etc. etc., require consideration. Some of these can be handled by the use of modifiers (many/most RSMeans users are not even aware of modifiers or how to use them), while in other cases new line items must be created.

P.S. What are you up to these days?

      1. I retired in 2011, but for some reason all this estimating stuff has stuck in my head. I did teach the Course twice afterwards as a contractor. Do some travel and whatever looks good to do. Been into Photography but this arctic winter has limited what to do. If you look at my Gravatar on WordPress you see the little Gingerman with a leg snapped. I posed for that. So, that sorta slows me down.
