Cleveland-area Lawnmower Thief Gets 12 Years

Landscaper mowing cemetery robbed at gunpoint; thief eventually captured and sentenced to 12 years in prison.

A Cleveland-area man who robbed a landscaper at gunpoint and stole his truck was sentenced to 12 years in prison on January 17, according to Huron County court records.

Huron County deputies arrested Garry Ellis, 21, at a Derussey Road home near Collins on October 24. Ellis told deputies he committed the robbery because he needed money. He had walked up the road to rob a landscaper mowing at a cemetery. He took the man’s cell phone and wallet, pulled out a handgun and walked the victim into a storage shed at the cemetery before driving off in the victim’s truck, which was hauling a trailer carrying a lawn mower, deputies said.
