A panel of industry veterans spent many hours reading and analyzing the record number of entries received for ENR’s Global Best Projects competition, now in its 10th year. Similar to ENR’s popular regional and national U.S. competitions, Global Best Projects identifies and recognizes project teams behind outstanding design and construction efforts of the past year located anywhere around the world. For projects located in the U.S. to compete, their project teams must include firms from outside the U.S.

Winners this year include 34 projects located in 18 different countries on every continent except Antarctica. These outstanding examples show the risks, rewards and hurdles overcome when designing and building internationally. All of the selected projects will be spotlighted in more detail in the Dec. 12 issue of ENR. In addition, that special issue will name which one of the Global Best Project-level winners will earn the coveted title of 2022 Global Project of the Year.

None of the entries could participate if they had any construction-related fatalities, and construction had to be complete between January 2021 and May 2022.

Judging the contest were: Michael Cannon, CEO/Chairman of KHS&S Contractors; Ginger Evans, President of Tower Consulting; Chris Heger, Vice President, Chief Innovation Officer of OAC; Lucas Lahitou, Head of Origination and Structuring for Shikun & Binui Concessions USA Inc.; David Miles, Kiewit Infrastructure Group President; Bob Prieto, Chairman and CEO of Strategic Project Management; Jay Reiser, Principal at Miyamoto International; Ahmad Sarshory, Senior Project Engineer at Keville Enterprises; Irena Savakova, Vice President, Global Design Principal at Leo A Daly; and David White, Engineer and Construction Manager at Watercare Services Ltd.

Any judge with a conflict of interest in any particular category was assigned to a different category. The panel looked at projects in many markets and examined safety performance, innovations, challenges, and design and construction. They also considered how the project benefits the local community and/or the construction industry.

The panel had discretion to designate top selections as Global Best Projects winners in a variety of categories, and choose Award of Merit winners as warranted.

This year, everyone worldwide has a chance to celebrate these global construction achievements and mingle with teams behind the projects at ENR's virtual awards event.
