Competition watchdog turns attention to civil engineering

Watchdogs at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) have launched a new “market study” into the design, planning and delivery of road and railway infrastructure across the country. The study will examine opportunities to improve how the public sector and civil engineers work together. It is likely to result in recommendations to government but not give the CMA the power directly to intervene in the market.

10-Year Infrastructure Strategy published

The government has published its much-heralded 10 Year Infrastructure Strategy. It sets out a long-term plan for how the government will invest in infrastructure and ensure that “funding is spent effectively and efficiently, marking a new approach to how projects are planned and delivered.” You can read the full 106-page document here. A pipeline of actual projects will be published later this summer.

Barhale bags £16m shaft tank for Severn Trent Water

Severn Trent Water has awarded Barhale a £16.35m contract to deliver the latest phase of a major infrastructure project at Etruria Vale in Stoke-on-Trent. The centrepiece of the scheme is a 20-metre diameter, 24-metre deep shaft tank, providing an additional 5,200m³ of overflow storage capacity. It will form a key element of the wider, multi-site Etruria Vale project, delivered under Severn Trent Water’s Framework Directive Scheme.
