Project Coordination - Early Days

Revit OpEd

This post attempts to outline how a project will develop (understanding there are exceptions) when considering multiple firms/models and attempting to keep each model aligned both in Revit's model environment and relative to the site location and survey information. It differs from previous explanations I've offered here because the separation of models tends to challenge the traditional Publish and Acquire Coordinates tools.

The Fight For The Top Spot of Google

Help Everybody Everyday

Mark Buckshon over at Construction Marketing Ideas has been writing about me as of late. Let me return that favor. Mark has achieved something few in our industry have; he owned a term in Google. That term is “construction marketing.” How did he do it? The short answer to that question is he created a website that is the most relevant site about construction marketing.

Open BIM standards?

DebunkTheBIM

The need to have universal standards for working in BIM has been identified long time ago. Not having one has a detrimental effect on BIM’s ability to mature. The buildingSMART alliance claims to have developed the ‘basis for true information interoperability with AEC’. I am unconvinced. It smells of arrogance to claim the right to force an entire industry to align with the rules that themselves are yet to be proven.

Prepare for Management Compensation and Bonus Reviews

PSMJ Resources

If you serve government clients, you should be prepared to support your management compensation and bonuses as the year end approaches. There is increased concern among various segments of our public sector clients over compensation and bonuses in A/E firms. Even if you have not encountered any scrutiny of these issues in past years, you should expect that increased attention will be paid to these areas through the remainder of 2010 and in 2011 proposals.

Dept. of Off Topic - Kewpie Dolls

Revit OpEd

You might wonder what Mr. OpEd could have in common with Kewpie Dolls ? In 1992-93ish I played drums for a three piece group by the same name. Formed by Jamie Treker and Mary Notarthomas, they hired a drummer to record an album with them. I think it was Tony Carbone, but not positive after so many years. After they finished the album they auditioned drummers to play live gigs with them.

Today is: A positive BIM BLOG day!

DebunkTheBIM

Over the last month, I managed to create an impression that I tend to dream up utopian BIM ideas and keep putting the boot into hard-working software developers. That I ignore progress made by many and constantly complain without offering any useful suggestions. A fair portrayal of my behaviour? No., I strongly disagree. For numerous reason. and anyway, I said I’d be positive, not unrealistically self critical!

Space Naming Tool - In the Box Please

Revit OpEd

Revit MEP users are hopefully aware of the available (via subscription only) tool cleverly called Space Naming Utility. I've been places though that are not and they deal with the unpleasant disconnect between Revit Architecture's Rooms and Revit MEP's Spaces, without the tool. Quite frustrating to have to coordinate these. The tool makes that process much simpler, if you know about it that is.

BIM Software providers take construction product manufacturers for a ride!

DebunkTheBIM

Manufacturers, make the digital representation of your building products simple to use, reliable, branded and valuable beyond their original purpose. Aim to help with at least one task the user performs regularly, has nothing to do with your product but makes their life easier. Most of all, be consistent and reliable. A very simple, reliable object will beat an elaborately conceived but poorly performing system-type tool any time.

Manufacturers/marketers/suppliers of construction products, select your CAD(BIM) platforms carefully when developing Model based libraries! Don’t get fooled by the number of sold licences when deciding, most important factor for choosing should be the level of influence future hands-on users will have within the project (selection, specification, swaying the client one way or other).

Can smart manufacturers/suppliers of construction products make a real difference TO BIM and still look after their ‘bottom line’?

DebunkTheBIM

I promised, I‘d give manufacturers/suppliers of construction products hints on how to work well in the BIM arena; However, before you (smart manufacturers/suppliers) get into analysing the 10 points I mentioned yesterday, there is another question to ponder: Is the digital representation of your products going to be a free-standing object type, attached to a system tool or a self-supporting tool operating within the host program?

Ribbon Tab Dance

I'm growing weary of the Ribbon Tab feature that allows you to cycle through the ribbon display options if you double click on a tab. I say weary because I've been using a Intous 4 for a few months now and I find that I occasionally double tap when I think the software is lagging or didn't accept my first tap. The result is a new ribbon format. During training it is annoying.

Sour grapes (Me and My Autodesk) Also how ‘Less is More’

OK, you’ve seen through me. Being so bitter about Autodesk is to do a bit with my abstract being rejected by the Australian Revit Users’ Conference. Spot ON! And there is more: I’ve had numerous run-ins with Archicad and GS over the years too. I never quite got the point of existence of Vectorworks and have largely stayed away from Microstation. VICO and I have a quiet truce and Gehry Technologies’ work I admire from a distance. buikdingSMART is probably the only party that really gets up my nos
