Understanding Today’s Separation of Landlord and Commercial Tenant Construction

HardHatChat

Do you know what construction responsibilities fall to a tenant and landlord in a build-to-suit space? While I think everyone in the retail industry likes to hear news that 2011 retail sales are up – as it usually means new retail construction projects are in the pipeline – it’s still tough for shopping center landlords to make deals work with retail tenants.

CFMA Conference Winners Were the Attendees

Carol Hagen

The Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) held their 2011 Annual Conference earlier this week and I must say those attending came out ahead. It’s not just the CPE credits and the speakers, but the networking that goes on that makes this such a success. Here are a few takeaways from the sessions, happenings and social events. The Chapter Summit was great and packed tightly with discussions, feedback and education.

Among the many factors that helped advance the sustainable design movement in Canada over the last decade was the realization that the construction and operation of buildings accounted for almost 40% of our annual GHG emissions. The evolution/revolution question of BIM? oldBIM, newBIM, realBIM?

DebunkTheBIM

Was it a rhetorical question even when I started with this blog? A third into my self-imposed timeframe, I am inclined to state that BIM is really going to be neither, it will fizzle out totally or at best turn into something quite different. NewBIM practitioners will want to distance themselves from the past (BIMs), so it will be called something quite different.

Should building owners have independent BIM representatives on their projects?

DebunkTheBIM

A sister question to the: “. Prescriptive/Specification-based BIM.” one. I do advocate for building owners to employ independent BIM advisors. If this became standard practice, it’d do a lot of good to AEC. Would call an end to bluffing and document stuffing that is going on now. Keep everyone on their toes, making sure that they concentrate on what matters, stay alert and ready to respond.

The ‘delegated info manipulation’ is me saying nicely that I do not like the concept of ‘marking up’ drawings for someone else to implement. This practice is totally unsustainable and should go.
