Retail Home Center Marketing Best Practices: Webcast Summary

Construction Marketing

The recent webcast on the topic of marketing to home improvement retailers was unprecedented in exploring a niche that seldom is discussed, for good reason. Manufacturers and suppliers to large retailers do not want competitors to gain any advantage in merchandising placement or line reviews. Such contracts are often multi-year and worth millions. Shown here, the top 10 home improvement retailers by revenue and store locations.

Has the Construction Industry Noticed This in LinkedIn Today?

Carol Hagen

Construction companies and the AEC industry struggle to leverage social media. They don’t understand the value that LinkedIn brings as they just see more emails notices they don’t want from overzealous salesmen. The business value is hidden in learning the obvious but overlooked features and functions. Let’s look closely at LinkedIn Today.

Soon enough, the old guys are there too, the laptop, the palmtop, the blackberry, all flickering in unison to their master tapping the somewhat understated dull keyboard. I tell him, he looks like a kid on the seashore, filling up bucket after bucket with sand and water and claiming to be examining the ocean-floor this way.

Ceiling Grid in Navisworks

Revit OpEd

Revit doesn't export the grid pattern of ceilings when you export to Navisworks. The grid pattern is really just a "hatch" pattern, fill pattern in Revit lingo. No joy if you want to see the grid in your export to.NWC. I responded to a post at RevitForum.org last week with this approach to get a fairly realistic result in Navisworks. I'm to inclined to distort the use of Sloped Glazing (roof tool).

A pie in the sky.

DebunkTheBIM

There is something weirdly familiar with the treatment ‘cloud computing’ is currently getting. I think I’ve seen this before. An approach that has existed in one form or another for quite some time gets a name and suddenly it takes off. Similarly to the way BIM ‘legalised’ attempts at using digital tools for improving construction, ‘the cloud’ has suddenly given an easy to remember name for something that is quite complex and hard to explain in a sentence or two.

Revit Links as Underlays

Revit OpEd

From Autodesk Wikihelp for Revit 2012. Using a Revit link as an underlay can be a common workflow for architects and especially for engineers. A link can be set to Halftone to distinguish it from the main model, but new work (model lines, for example) can still end up being obscured by geometry (walls, etc) in the link--making it difficult to see what you've drawn.

What is the best platform to combine data presented as either 2D or 3D+ in?

DebunkTheBIM

Now, don’t bother trying to talk me out of the question or prove it to me why it is bad practice to combine 2D and 3D in the first place. Let’s just assume that it is a valid question and that I have numerous and totally legitimate reasons to regularly combine 2D and 3D+ data into one, digital place. I like bringing 2D drawings (in fact that is what they are) into an accurately defined 3D space where I then model over.

Location, Location and Location

Revit OpEd

The age old real estate advice this is not. When you use separate site and building files to manage your project, it is possible to become confused between defining the Project Location (such as Wapakoneta, Ohio versus Amstelveen, Holland) and the Location related to Shared Coordinates. One is not the other. It is possible to also assume that setting the Project Location and then using Acquire Coordinates will pass along the location to the other project file (linked.rvt file).
