Construction Sector Adds 5,000 Jobs Between August and September

(October 9, 2012) - Construction employers added 5,000 jobs in September while the industry's unemployment rate hit 11.9 percent, according to an analysis of new federal data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials cautioned that construction employment has been relatively flat for more than a year as growing demand for residential and some commercial projects has been offset by declining public sector construction activity.

Lack of Rigging Inspections Cited in New York Crane Death

Yonkers Contracting Co. Inc. has been cited for 10 alleged serious violations of workplace safety in connection with the April 3 death of a worker on the No. 7 subway extension project in Manhattan. The worker, an employee of subcontractor J&E Industries of Belle Harbor, was fatally struck by a crane boom at the 524 W. 33rd St. work site after the wire rope used to raise and lower the boom broke, causing it to fall.

Paving Contractor Fined for Heat Fatality

LH Musser & Sons, Clarksburg, Md., has been cited and fined $6,900 for one serious violation of OSHA’s general duty clause following a heat-related fatality in June.
