Issue for construction (IFC) drawing is a 2D drawing issued by the architects or consultants to the construction contractor during the final stage of the design process.
It describes generalized details of construction based on which a contractor can bid the estimated amount in terms of price, labor, material, equipment, etc., to complete the work.
This article describes the features and purpose of IFC drawings in construction.
Features of IFC Drawings
- The drawings involved in a construction project, cycles through various purposes from tender, Issued for Approval (IFA) and Issued For Construction (IFC).
- IFC drawings must not be confused with Good for Construction (GFC) drawings. GFC are construction drawings and specifications designated for the project, that are approved by the local governing bodies and the clients.
- After the contract is awarded, a general contractor requests a set of “Issued for Construction” documents. IFC drawings are included in this IFC set.
- A consultant issues the IFC drawings and documents (IFC set) to a contractor as a part of contract documents and agreements. Hence, IFC drawings are verified by an authorized department or client and designated as “Issued for Construction.”
- The IFC mark on a contract document states that the subject document is ready for construction.
- IFC drawings are used to prepare shop drawings. Shop drawings are more detailed drawings of construction work that illustrate guidance on “how to do it”. Shop drawings show the detailed design of specific parts or units in construction. Shop drawings are created by contractors, fabricators, and suppliers.
- Every shop drawing is an IFC drawing, but every IFC drawing is not a shop drawing.
- IFC drawings do not show the actuals on the site. They undergo several corrections and revisions once they have been issued.
- Nowadays, both IFC and shop drawings can be extracted from a BIM model.
The option for IFC set helps the architect create a set for internal use in administering the contract. They lessen the effort to prepare and check PDFs while issuing to the contractor.
All shop drawings are extracted from a particular IFC drawing. Hence, IFC drawings play a significant role in construction projects as they help detail finer areas of construction designs.
The project's stakeholders undertake IFC drawings before on-site construction, irrespective of whether the project is a residential, commercial, or industrial project.
