Federal Role in America’s Infrastructure

New House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) has scheduled a hearing on the federal role in America’s infrastructure.”   The goal of the meeting is likely encourage his peers to  exempt transportation from their proposals to scale back government spending.

“Transportation and infrastructure have long been recognized as federal responsibilities shared with the states, …. Understanding the federal role in financing, building, and maintaining an efficient system of infrastructure is critical to ensuring U.S. economic growth and global competitiveness,”  –  Shuster

Congress approved a two-year, $105 billion surface transportation bill last year. The House’s original proposal limits transit spending to the approximately $35 billion per year.
