Florida Convention Center Const. Paused

Aug. 24, 2020

The pandemic has slowed convention center renovations in Broward County, Florida, putting on hold the construction of an 800-room hotel as well as the east side of the redeveloped center. The renovations are meant to keep the allure alive for big events in Broward after hospitality to prevent the country from missing out on business by lacking the facilities to host larger conventions.

Broward commissioners approved the project in 2016. By postponing certain work, the country is projecting its ability to finance the project over the long term.

How long delays will be remains to be seen, according to the Sun Sentinel. The county is still moving forward with the west-side expansion of the convention center and is finalizing designs for the delayed portions. The now delayed eastern side project includes a large ballroom, 350-thousand square feet of much-needed exhibition space, meeting rooms, and a kitchen.
