Sacramento County officials are speeding along housing approvals and home building by easing some development standards for apartment projects and allowing for the construction of duplexes in single-family zoning districts, The Sacramento Bee reports. Recent streamlining efforts stem from a 2019 state grant allocated to reviewing and modify local ordinances to increase housing supply.
New development is focused on infill lots, but lingering zoning restrictions prevent new multifamily construction in single-family neighborhoods. Still, builders and housing advocates are pushing for policy changes and expanding their project portfolios to boost housing stock in between existing developments.
The areas that likely would see the biggest benefit or impact related to the proposed changes are those with a high concentration of small infill lots between existing housing developments. That could include south Sacramento, Fair Oaks, Arden Arcade, Foothill Farms, Vineyard, North Highlands, Rio Linda, Elverta and Antelope, county staff said.
