Historic floods this month brought higher levels of debris and silt than normal into the city of Austin’s waterways, pushing water treatment capacity to its limits. Officials issued a citywide boil notice that went into effect Oct. 22. It’s unclear how long the boil notice will last, but it could be several more days, Austin Water officials told the Austin American-Statesman on Oct. 22. The city is urging residents to reduce water consumption. Austin’s water treatment plants can produce about 105 million gallons of water per day, but current use is at about 120 mgd, according to an update released by the city on Oct. 23. Officials also warned that reservoir levels are dropping rapidly.
