New York National Grid Energy Services and the City of New York, the two major “potentially responsible parties,” are preparing to begin cleaning up the Gowanus Canal Superfund Site in Brooklyn. The 1.8-mile-long, 100-ft-wide waterway was excavated in the 1860s and remains in use. The job has been divided into three segments, each of which is expected to take two years. For the first and second segments, the EPA is proposing to dredge about 307,000 cu yd of highly contaminated sediment. In some areas where the sediment is contaminated with liquid coal tar, the sediment will be stabilized by mixing it with concrete or similar materials and then covered with layers of clean material, followed by an armor layer of heavier gravel and stone to prevent erosion by boat traffic or currents. For the third segment, 281,000 cu yd of contaminated sediment will be dredged, and then an armor layer of sand will be laid to help restore habitat. A contractor is expected to be chosen in 2019, and dredging is expected to start in 2020. A pilot dredging project by Sevenson Environmental Services is currently under way. The project is valued at $500 million. Contact: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-Region 2, Attn: Elías Rodríguez, Press Officer, 290 Broadway, New York City, 10007. DR#09-00621214.
