In 2016, Spartanburg’s then-92-year-old Montgomery Building faced imminent condemnation. Developer BF Spartanburg joined efforts with Harper General Contractors and McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture to restore the local landmark as the gateway to the city. In completely renovating the 10-story, 127,000-sq-ft building, crews—working across three elevations while up to 128 ft above a major intersection—removed some 3,400 pieces of precast concrete cladding and installed new cast-stone pieces to replicate the original precast. Craftsmen also installed 400 custom mahogany windows and 36 steel windows to match the original windows. The restored local icon now offers retail and dining, office space and 63 residential apartments.
