Year-over-year single-family permits increased in nearly every U.S. state for the month of September, according to the NAHB’s Eye on Housing. A 21.2% YoY increase was reported from September 2020, and year-to-date permitting also saw substantial growth for the first 9 months of 2021, particularly in the South. Texas reported high increases in new home construction permits with three cities in the top 10 metro areas for both single-family and multi-family starts.

Year-to-date ending in September, single-family permits increased in all four regions. The Southern region reported the strongest increase of 22.8%, followed by Northeast (+20.4%), West (+20.3%), and Midwest (+16.1%). Multifamily permits were robust across the country in September compared to last year; West (+35.3%), Midwest (+26.7%), South (+24.5%), and Northeast (+17.7%),

Between September 2020 YTD and September 2021 YTD, 49 states and the District of Columbia saw growth in single-family permits issued. The District of Columbia recorded the highest growth rate during this time at 234.7% from 98 to 328. Mississippi reported a decline of 0.5%.
