Pike Place MarketFront Celebrates Groundbreaking Four Decades in the Making

Representatives from the city of Seattle, Washington; Pike Place Market; the Miller Hull Partnership and Sellen were on hand for the MarketFront's groundbreaking ceremony in June.

The festive event began with a march to the future site of the MarketFront led by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. Hundreds of merchants, artists, residents and supporters of Pike Place Market participated in the march, cheering and waving “Pike Up!” flags to celebrate the historic milestone.

“Pike Place Market is the heart and soul of Seattle,” said Murray. “We are breaking ground on an incredible story today.”

Lillian Sherman Hochstein, executive director of the Market Foundation, led a cheer as Sellen's crew raised a large “Pike Up!” banner on the Desimone Bridge overlooking the job site.

Designed by the Miller Hull Partnership, the project will transform the existing surface parking lot into a new, public space with additional room for vendors, farmers and artists. The project, scheduled to open in early 2017, also includes 300 additional parking spots and 40 apartments for low-income seniors.
