Multigenerational living is on the rise. Here's what Designer Seth Hart of DTJ Design wants builders to know about adding an in-law suite within the footprint of a single-family home.
Having multiple generations under one roof can be an economic, health, or simply a choice out of desire. Hart’s design allows for full separation and privacy, even going so far as to include double-framed, insulated separation walls between the two areas of the home.
“This really provides good opportunities for large families to live together under one roof, but still maintaining some privacy and separation of spaces by having that living area with the guest suite on the ground floor, and really allowing a bit more flexibility of how people can live independently in that one home,” says Hart.
And as lifestyle needs change, this area can flex to meet any those changing demands.

Hart’s design can be seen in full detail in the March 2020 issue of Pro Builder.
