ENR New York is pleased to announce this year's regional Specialty Contractor of the Year is Coordinated Metals Inc., commonly called CMI.

The Carlstadt, N.J.-based metal fabricator, founded in 1974, has seen its revenue rise steadily, to $21.2 million in 2018 from $20.47 in 2017; it made $20.42 in 2016. The firm’s CFO credits this partly to competitive architects, who “are trying to one-up each other so the designs are more elaborate.”

Indeed, CMI upgraded its shop to accommodate clients’ more complex, higher value project demands. Its 36,000 sq ft plant has two power brake presses at 12-ft and 14-ft capacity with matching shears, welding and polishing capabilities, and other related metal working equipment to make products out of stainless steel, bronze and aluminum, along with related glass and glazing.

The firm’s largest project completed in 2018 is the Hudson Yards retail podium, a contract worth $8.2 million. Its largest regional project that broke ground, meanwhile, was 1 Vanderbilt, an $18.2 million contract value.

There's still time for New Jersey and New York firms to fill out our Top Specialty Contractors survey: click here to submit online.

CMI — as well as Owner of the Year L&M Development Partners, Design Firm of the Year Urbahn Architects, Contractor of the Year Judlau Contracting Inc./OHL North America, our soon-to-be-announced Legacy Award winner and of course the region's Best Projects — will be celebrated Oct. 2, 2019, at the annual ENR New York Best Projects Awards breakfast.

CMI will be profiled in the November issue of ENR New York.
