The Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation is the 2024 ENR MidAtlantic Owner of the Year, and will be featured in the April print issue of ENR MidAtlantic.  

The Owner of the Year is chosen by ENR editors for its innovation and creativity within the region as well as for its community contributions. Previous ENR MidAtlantic recipients include the Morgan State University, West Virginia Dept. of Transportation, Boston Properties, Penn Med, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, DelDott, Douglas Development, DC Public Schools and DC Water. 

PennDOT, in the last year, has delivered on long-term priorities, emergency responses, modernizing operations, and rapidly implementing the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

With an additional $125 million committed to the state’s roads and bridges for the 2022-23 fiscal year, PennDOT improved more than 7,000 roadway miles and 684 state and locally owned bridges were let to be repaired, replaced, or preserved. Additionally, 1,347 projects were underway or went out for bid with a total value of nearly $10 billion.

PennDOT also sprung into action after a tanker truck crash and fire collapsed an Interstate-95 bridge in northeast Philadelphia. Less than six months after the accident, the first section of the permanent replacement bridge opened to traffic on Nov. 6. Traffic moved from the temporary roadway—which opened only 12 days after the June 11 accident—to the recently completed outer lanes ahead of schedule. PennDOT and its contractors continue work on the section carrying approximately 160,000 vehicles daily.
