Brasfield & Gorrie, BLOC Complete Terminal Modernization at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Brasfield & Gorrie and joint venture partner BLOC Global Services announced the completion of a terminal modernization project at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport in Birmingham, Alabama.

Brasfield & Gorrie and BLOC recently completed the second and final phase of the $201.6-million airport renovation and addition project, which totaled $168 million in construction costs. The first phase of the project, which included Concourses A and B, opened in March 2013.

The modernization project expanded the existing airport to three concourses with 19 gates, including two international gates and room for four future gates, nearly doubling the size of the airport. New passenger and baggage screening systems were also installed to meet the current federal guidelines.

The project involved extensive planning for multiple relocations of airport tenants, including six airlines. During the entire course of the project, Brasfield & Gorrie and BLOC coordinated 10 airline moves, three moves by Transportation Security Administration and two moves by airline operations.

Brasfield & Gorrie and joint venture partner BLOC served as construction manager at risk for this project, which began in 2011 as a way to upgrade the airport to post-September 11 security standards and improve convenience for travelers.
