Student Services Building at California State Polytechnic University at Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona)
Pomona, Calif.
Award of Merit

Owner: California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
Contractor: C.W. Driver
Lead Design Firm: CO Architects

Symbolizing Cal Poly Pomona’s commitment to sustainability, this facility sets a new standard for LEED Platinum buildings for the entire California State University system. Designed to complement the local landscape, the concrete structure is enclosed in a glass curtain wall with elegant metal panels.

The surrounding hills and mountains inspired an iconic undulating roof, which also serves a primary role in the passive solar design. The roof’s perforated overhangs shade the exterior glass, reduce thermal loads and glare, and maximize daylight.

Under normal circumstances, this type of roof would utilize light-gauge framing; however, its complex shape with deep curves and valleys required a new solution. The roof substrate includes roof clips over concrete on the main buildings and tubular steel on the overhangs.
