Barton Malow had a big year in 2022. With major projects in Charlotte and Nashville, the contractor more than tripled its revenue in the Southeast region year-over-year as it continues to grow, focusing on safety, sustainability and its people.

Those efforts and more have earned the nearly 100-year-old firm selection as ENR Southeast 2023 Contractor of the Year, from among more than 100 firms participating in this year’s ENR Southeast Top Contractors ranking.

Barton Malow will be featured in the July 3 edition of ENR Southeast, along with the Top Contractors ranking, and will be recognized this fall at ENR Southeast’s Regional Best Projects Awards.

Founded in 1924 in Detroit, Barton Malow has its Southeast headquarters in Orlando, joining offices in Nashville, Charlotte and Tampa, where it has a total 104 employees.

In 2022, the firm secured multiple large projects, including being named construction manager for Vanderbilt University’s Athletics Mater Plan Project in Nashville, where its sports construction team will “transform [the school's] athletics facilities and set the benchmark for collegiate athletic excellence,” the firm said.

According to the firm, the north end zone of Vanderbilt Stadium will include a new basketball facility with practice courts, locker rooms and weight rooms, while the south end zone will gain new seating, amenities and hospitality areas.

A major makeover for the home of Vanderbilt’s athletics, the McGugin Center will include sports medicine and performance centers as well as new training rooms. Barton Malow will also construct a new indoor football practice facility near the university’s existing outdoor training facilities.

In Charlotte, Barton Malow completed the $32-million renovation of the American Legion Memorial Stadium, a project that earned an ABC Carolinas Excellence in Construction Eagle Award. Originally opened in 1936 and constructed through the Works Progress Administration public works program, according to Barton Malow, the project added support buildings, reconstructed the original stone field wall and replicated ticketing booths and more.

To support workforce development, the firm started a Lean University to create a Lean-enabled workforce and enhance project performance with 40 hours of in-person learning and hands-on exercises. Its Planning Rotation Program supports future leaders by exposing them to all aspects of planning and partnering them with mentors and cross-training them in estimating, preconstruction, scheduling and virtual design and construction.

Barton Malow ranked at No. 72 on last year’s Top Contractors list, with regional revenue of $209 million.
