AISC Task Force To Study Salesforce Transit Center Report Recommendations

The American Institute of Steel Construction has formed a task force to consider the recommendations made by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission peer review panel on the Salesforce Transit Center's flange fractures to determine if any changes need to be made to the AISC Steel Specification. The group also will decide whether any guidance should be added to the AISC Steel Manual.

The area's MTC convened the panel after the discovery of fractures, in late September 2018, in the tapered girders over Fremont Street in San Francisco's new bus depot.

Duane Miller, of Lincoln Electric, is the chair of the AISC group, which is working pro bono. Other members are Rob Connor, from Purdue University; Jim Fisher, a past chair of the AISC specification committee; Chris Hewitt of Simpson Gumpertz & Heger; Larry Muir, a consultant; Tom Murray, of Virginia Tech, Tom Schlafly, representing AISC, Jim Schoen, of Nucor-Yamato Steel and AISC's Eric Bolin, the group's secretary.

No timeline has been set for the group's recommendations, says Larry Kruth, AISC's vice president of engineering and research.
